The Heaven is for Real movie is out in theaters and many Christians are promoting it. My point of this post is not to review the movie or the book but to bring awareness to the fact that it does not line up with scripture.
Just like the Noah Movie which was anti scriptural we need to be aware of what Hollywood is promoting as Christian truth. If it does not line up with scripture it should be tossed out. (Col. 2:8; 2 Corinthians 10:5)
Description of the Movie
Based on the #1 New York Times best-selling book of the same name, HEAVEN IS FOR REAL brings to the screen the true story of a small-town father who must find the courage and conviction to share his son’s extraordinary, life-changing experience with the world.
The film stars Academy Award® nominee and Emmy® award winning actor Greg Kinnear as Todd Burpo and co-stars Kelly Reilly as Sonja Burpo, the real-life couple whose son Colton (newcomer Connor Corum) claims to have visited Heaven during a near death experience.
Colton recounts the details of his amazing journey with childlike innocence and speaks matter-of-factly about things that happened before his birth … things he couldn’t possibly know. Todd and his family are then challenged to examine the meaning from this remarkable event… ( This is the description taken from the movies official Facebook Page)
Is it Scriptural
Proverbs 30:4 ask the question ” Who has ascended into heaven and descended?”
John 3:13 answers no one but the Son of Man.
From scripture we can conclude that no one has gone to heaven and then come back but Jesus who is from heaven. So in reference to the book and movie; we have to ask why would God use a 3-4 year old boy to reveal a new revelation?
Paul’s Account of Heaven
Paul gives an account, in 2 Corinthians 12:1-6, of whom scholars believe to be himself taken up to heaven. He is not even sure if it was in the body or not. He only speaks on it for three verses and gives no real description.
He even says he shouldn’t talk about it because there is no proof. No one else could see or know if he was telling the truth.
Isaiah’s Account of Heaven
In Isaiah 6:1-6 he gives his account of heaven. What happens to him? He sees his own sin and the sin of the people around him. He mostly speaks of the glory of the Lord. So it seems that if one were to get a glimpse of heaven they would only be talking about the Lord. What is the message of this movie? Is it Jesus?
Ezekiel’s Account of Heaven
In Ezekiel 1 he describes what he saw in heaven. Ezekiel 1:26-28 he describes the Lord whom he saw: “As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking.”
Notice his focus as well is the Lord. In fact he falls on his face in worship! Is this the message of Heaven is for Real movie? Does the presence of the Lord cause the boy to worship? Is he even focusing on the glory of the Lord?
John’s Account of Heaven
In Revelation 4-5 John gives his account of heaven. Guess what, he speaks of the same thing. Jesus on his throne. He tells to the glory of the Lord and how the created worship Him.
Do you see the message that the bible tells of heaven. It is the glory of the Lord. It is not a feel good humanistic story which I assume is what the movie tells.
