Is Jesus God

Is Jesus God

Was Jesus a good man? Was Jesus just another prophet? Did Jesus just live the life that we should all try to follow? When the name Jesus comes up I dare say that everyone in this world has an opinion about Him. But is Jesus God? This is the question we will tackle today.

We are going to take a look at 4 points that will help you to answer the question: is Jesus God. We are going to see that He possesses the attributes of God, He performs the works of God, He is given the names and titles for God and the He Himself claimed to be God.

Let us start with a quote by C.S.Lewis from Mere Christianity to set the tone.

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say.

A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell.

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

Jesus Possesses The Attributes of God

A.H. Strong in Systematic Theology defines the attributes of God as: “those distinguishing characteristics of the divine nature which are inseparable form the idea of God and which constitute the basis and ground for His various manifestations to His creatures.” We are going to see through scripture that Christ is eternal, omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent.

He is Eternal

John 1:1 affirms the eternality of Christ. The verb “was” (GK. imperfect hen) suggest His continuous existence in time past. In Hebrews 1:11-12 the writer applies Psalm 102:25-27, expressing the eternality of God to Christ. Paul Enns The Moody Handbook of Theology

He is Omnipresent

In Matthew 28:20 Christ told His disciples that He would be with them always. “Recognizing that Christ has a human nature as well as a divine nature, it should be stated that in His humanity he is localized in heaven, but in His deity He is omnipresent.” John Walvoord Jesus Christ Our Lord

Christ’s indwelling of every believer demands that He is omnipresent (cf. John 14:23; Eph. 3:17 Col. 1:27; Rev. 3:20) Paul Enns Moody Handbook of Theology

He is Omniscient

We see His omniscience in the fact that He knew the heart of man in John 2:25. He had never met the Samaritan woman but knew her past John 4:18. His disciples saw that he knew all things in John 16:30. He continually predict His own death which proves His omniscience ( Matt. 16:21; Matt. 17:22; Matt. 20:18-19; Matt. 26:1-2)

He is Omnipotent

You can see in Matt. 28:18 that He had all authority on heaven and earth. Jesus also had the power to forgive sins. This is something only God can do. ( Mark 2:5-10; Isa. 43:25; Isa. 55:7)

Jesus Performs The Works of God

We are going to take a look at some of the works that Christ performed that can only be credited to God You will see that He is Creator, He forgives sins, He imparts life, He resurrects the dead and He will judge all people.

He is Creator

In John 1:3 you see that Jesus created all things and that nothing came into being that has not been created by Him. Colossians 1:16 you in fact see that all things have been created by Him and for Him. All things both in heaven and earth. What is amazing is the fact that all things both visible and invisible. Jesus has created invisible beings for Himself!

He Forgives Sin

In Mark 2:1-12 Jesus Christ forgives sin eternally. This is a work of God and God alone; as mans sin is toward God.

He Imparts Life

In John 5:21 He states that just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, He also gives life to whom He wishes.

He Resurrects the Dead

In John 11:42-44 He called out to a dead Lazarus and told him to come forth. Truly only the power of God and God alone can raise the dead.

He Will Judge All People

In both John 5:22 and John 5:27 we see that Jesus tells us that the Father has given all judgement to Himself (Jesus).

Jesus Was Given The Names and Titles For God

We will see in scripture that Christ was called Son of God, Lord and God.

He Was Called Son Of God

In John 10:36 he used the name for Himself and in Matthew 26:63-64 others used it for Him. Let’s have a look at what the title actually means.

‘What does it mean? Though the phrase “son of” can mean “offspring,’ it also carries the meaning “of the order of”. ” Thus in the Old Testament “sons of prophets” meant of the order of prophets (1 Kings 20:35), and “sons of the singers” meant of the order of the singers (Neh. 12:28).

The designation “Son of God” when used of our Lord means the order of God and is a strong and clear claim of full Deity.” Charles C. Ryrie Basic Theology

” In Jewish usage the term Son of….did not generally imply any subordination, but rather equality and identity of nature….Thus for Christ to say, “I am the Son of God” (John 10:36) was understood by His contemporaries as identifying Himself as God, equal with the Father, in an unqualified sense. J. Oliver Buswell A Systematic Theology of the Christian Religion

Jesus Claimed to Be God

The most important point in proving that Jesus was God is that He Himself claimed to be God.

In John 10:30 He sates that He and the Father are one.

” The neuter form of “one” rules out the meaning that He and the Father were one person. It means that they are in perfect unity in natures and actions, a fact that could only be true if He were as much Deity as the Father. The people who heard this claim understood it that way, for they immediately tried to stone Him for blasphemy because he made Himself out to be God (John 10:33).” Charles C. Ryrie Basic Theology

The question really is not is Jesus God, but are you going to submit to His Lordship and receive His free gift of salvation!

We took a look at scripture and saw He possesses the attributes of God, He performs the works of God, He is given the names and titles for God and He Himself claimed to be God.

C.S.Lewis in Mere Christianity  said it best:

You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.

Jesus came into this world and lived a perfect sinless life, became the offering for your sins, died on the cross and God raised Him from the dead on the third day. He is seated at the right hand of the Father praying intersession for believers. If you are not in a relationship with Him you can be today.

Romans 10:9-11 (NIV)

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
